Well, it’s slow tonight, and sleep doesn’t seem to be in the cards for the next few hours, so AMA if you feel like it. I have 11 cars and 6 boats. I’m retired in my early 30s. I used to be a lawyer. I fish more than anyone should. I’m a beer and tequila nerd. And other stuff too. Have at it.
Or, if you’d rather, just enjoy this picture of my Blazer in its natural habitat.

I see 911 in your screenname. I am intrigued. Ever own a 911? Pics?
(911 FTW.)

It’s an ‘87 turbo look cabriolet. It’s more than quadrupled in value since I bought it. So that worked out well.

I'm looking into being a lawyer...what advice do you have? I'm currently a high school student and plan to major in political sciences....thanks

Make sure you’re in to it. I got really lucky all the way through, but most of my law school buddies ended up hundreds of thousands in debt, with a shitty job in a super-competitive field, doing work they hate. You don’t want that. A law degree isn’t a license to print money anymore.
Try to volunteer at a courthouse or something to make sure you can dedicate yourself to law. Because to get a decent job out of school, you’ll have to be near the top of your class out of law school, which takes ridiculous amounts of work. And law wears you down quick if you don’t like the material.
Also, I wouldn’t do Poli-Sci. Do pre-law if you can, otherwise major in the field where you want to practice law. I was a business major, and it helped me a lot in all the business-related stuff I did. If I had it to do over, I would have majored in engineering and gone into intellectual property law. Poli-Sci will help a little bit in law school, but it’s pretty much worthless after that. Also, if you decide not to do law, your only other options are politics or teaching.
Try to do a little theater too. It gets you comfortable being on the spot in front of crowds, and gives you a little bit of swag and showmanship, which are very good if you want to get in front of juries.

I’ll think about changing from Poli Sci. I’m currently taking a ROP Law class taught by a former lawyer. I’ve taken a Law class before this, and I find the law and how it can be exploited in a fascinating way. I’ve experienced firsthand from a middle school age on the idiocracies of a dishonest lawyer and since I’ve had an altruistic view of life.

That’s important. Try to hold on to it. It’s really easy to get cynical.

With 11 cars there has to be a beater in there somewhere. What car is your beatter, that you love to hate? But can’t getrid of.

I just want to say thank you for having a clean K5 Blazer, and not lifting it like crazy. It looks perfect just like that. Now I have go to look up K5s on Craigslist.

To bounce off the theater thing, I highly recommend Toastmasters for building speaking skills. I’ve been doing Toastmasters for about a year and went from having a marginal amount of confidence with public speaking to constantly being complimented on my speaking skills.

Why did you retire so young? I don’t really mean financially, I think I would get bored not working when I’m still so young. Do you ever get bored and wish you had a job to go to?

That is a sweet freaking Blazer!
I’m shocked and a bit jealous that somebody my age is both loaded and retired. Did you retire because you didn’t like the work?

Ive got a little hunting trailer at the Colorado River where I keep ‘93 Exploder. I hate that car so much. It lives in 130 degree heat, so everything in the interior is sticky.

Yeah dude. It’s pretty rare to see nowadays. It’s bone stock except for the grille guard and Hellas. It was my grandpa’s truck, so I like keeping it original.

Stand up comedy open mics are good too. It’s a retty similar feeling to being in front of a jury.

Ohh I remember seeing your write up on it. That's awesome that you're basically keeping it stock

I just got tired. I’ve been working since middle school, and 100 hour weeks were getting routine. Then when I had time off, I was goin hard at my hobbies. Exhausting stuff like adventuring down in Baja, backwooods camping in Alaska, overnights in my boat to Catalina, and that sort of thing. Plus I have pretty gnarly insomnia that gets worse with stress, and I wasn’t sleeping much. So I was basically never not tired, which sucked. So I ran some numbers and figured out how much money I needed to make and invest to mostly maintain my lifestyle, stuck it out til I hit that number, and got out.
The boredom is serious. I really don’t miss being told what time to wake up and stuff, but I am thinking about starting some little low-stress business so I have stuff to do when all my friends are at work.

Not really loaded. I was on my way to being loaded, so I bought a bunch of shit. Now I’m just trying to keep up with all my expenses. So far so good, but there will be problems in the future.
Read what I just wrote to Jake about why I retired. I actually liked the work a lot. I had lots of interaction with my clients, who for the most part were good folks. And it was super fulfilling helping out good people who had been fucked over. So it was easy for me to justify working a 110 hour week because I took that responsibility to my clients seriously. But when you work that much, there’s no way not to flame out.

Yeah. Needs a big restoration though. That starts in January.

That was going to be my follow on: have you considered going into business for yourself? Something simple to pass the time.

Yeah. Probably do something fishing-related. That would allow me to write off 4 properties, 6 boats, 5 trucks, and thousands per year in gas and bait and stuff. The tax benefits alone would make it worth the effort.

That makes sense. My uncle is a lawyer who spent a lot of years chained to his desk for 20 hours a day. It ultimately cost him his marriage and his relationship with one of his kids. The relationship with his other two kids is ... complicated.
He never got out, but he stuck it out until he made his way far enough up the food chain that he could spend most of his days golfing.

That’s easy to do. I guess some people get acclimated to the crazy hours and kind of hit a stride. Law’s tough like that. It either drives you crazy, or makes you drive everyone around you crazy.

That’s a good way to put it!

How much for the Blazer?
![]() 11/10/2015 at 20:44 |

Millions of dollars. It was my grandpa’s truck. I don’t think I’d trade it straight across for a 918 or P1.

And you’d only need like one employee and you could just see if one of your buddies would want to do it. Would you want to own a shop, or take out charters? Is there money to be made in selling trophy fish to people or businesses that want nice ones mounted in their house or business? Just don’t screw up and make the business something that makes you dislike going fishing in the long run!

“So that worked out well.” Hahaha!

I’d probably do something on the manufacturing or distribution side. That would probably make it easier for me to justify the tax write-offs.

Sounds like more than one employee - ha! I guess you could set up an Amazon and/or Ebay storefront to start and buy certain items wholesale to sell and ship. If you ever need a logo design, let me know.

Will do, thanks bud. At first at least, I’d just do it all myself. Dealing with employees is a real pain in the ass in CA.

Pretty sure dealing with employees is a pain in the ass anywhere, just more so in CA.
